Before Rome
Before the development of the Roman Catholic Church, there were many individual churches that recognized only Jesus as the head of their church.

The Roman Catholic Church was formed by a split between Rome and Constantinople in 1059 AD. The year of the split was the end of many years of unbiblical maneuvering for control of Christendom. The Roman Catholic Church existed before that date as a movement within Christianity that also included the Eastern Orthodox Church.
